Pavarana

 

Pavāranā is a central pillar of Buddhist monasticism. It provides one of the main checks and balances built into the Vinaya by the Buddha to prevent the hierarchical organization of the Sangha from becoming too rigid.

Pavarana is the practice of giving and receiving feedback. It is formalised by an annual ceremony. During the ceremony every monk formally requests all his fellow monks to offer him admonition if they have seen, heard, or suspected him of behaving inappropriately. The skill of giving and receiving feedback is one of the most important social skills for monks to learn.

Ven. Sariputta, one of the two chief disciples is venerated as the greatest example of a monk genuinely open to and appreciative of feedback. The story is told that on one occasion he unwittingly wore his under-robe unevenly - a minor transgression. A seven year old novice who noticed this, pointed it out. Ven. Sariputta immediately withdrew to a quiet corner and adjusted his robe. On his return he approached the novice with folded hands, (and, we can imagine, with a warm, reassuring smile on his face) saying, “Now it is correct, teacher.”

In a reference to this incident in the Mīlindapañhā, verses are ascribed to Ven. Sāriputta.

If one who has gone forth this day at the age of seven

Should teach me, I accept with lowered head;

At sight of him I show my zeal and respect

May I always set him in the teachers’ place (Mil397)

ปวารณาเป็นเสาหลักสำคัญของพุทธศาสนา  เป็นการตรวจสอบและถ่วงดุลหลักประการหนึ่งที่พระพุทธเจ้าทรงสร้างขึ้นในพระวินัย เพื่อป้องกันไม่ให้การจัดลำดับชั้นของคณะสงฆ์เข้มงวดเกินไป

ปวรณา คือ การฝึกการให้และรับผลตอบรับ  เป็นทางการโดยพิธีประจำปี  ในระหว่างพิธี พระภิกษุทุกรูปจะร้องขออย่างเป็นทางการให้เพื่อนภิกษุตักเตือนหากได้เห็น ได้ยิน หรือสงสัยว่าตนประพฤติตนไม่เหมาะสม  ทักษะการให้และรับคำติชมเป็นทักษะทางสังคมที่สำคัญที่สุดประการหนึ่งที่พระภิกษุต้องเรียนรู้

  พระสารีบุตร หนึ่งในพระอัครสาวก 2 องค์ ได้รับการยกย่องว่าเป็นตัวอย่างที่ดีเยี่ยมของพระภิกษุผู้เปิดกว้างและซาบซึ้งต่อคำติชมอย่างแท้จริง  เล่าขานกันว่ามีครั้งหนึ่งเขาสวมเสื้อชั้นในไม่เท่ากันโดยไม่รู้ตัว ซึ่งเป็นการละเมิดเล็กน้อย  สามเณรอายุเจ็ดขวบสังเกตเห็นสิ่งนี้จึงชี้ให้เห็น  เวน  พระสารีบุตรรีบถอยไปยังมุมสงบแล้วจัดจีวรทันที  เมื่อกลับมาก็เข้าไปหาสามเณรด้วยมือประสานกัน (และเราคงนึกภาพออกด้วยรอยยิ้มอันอบอุ่นและมั่นใจบนใบหน้า) แล้วพูดว่า “ถูกต้องแล้วอาจารย์”
